There was great news for the society recently when it was announced that society member Daniel Doherty had been nominated for the Best Comedian award at the Waterford International Festival Of Light Opera (WIFLO). Daniel, along with other society members Gerry Miley and Niall Heaney (all pictured below), had performed in the Galway-based Encore Theatre Company's production of "How The West Wasn't Won".
Daniel was nominated for his performance of "Wyatt Twerp". The other two nominees in the category were both from Flaggy Lane's (Waterford) production of "Singin' In The Rain", Rory Robinson as the "Voice Coach" and the winner of the award, Damien Douglas as "Cosmo". Flaggy Lane's "Singin' In The Rain" won 8 awards in total, including Best Overall Show.
Encore's "How The West Wasn't Won" faired very well with a total of 6 nominations - Cathriona O'Connell (Belle) for Best Supporting Woman, Hildagarde Naughton (Camility Jane) for Best Comedienne, Peter Kennedy for Best Professional Director, Michael Coen (The Singing Cowboy) for Best Supporting Man and Best Costumes.
Castlerea audiences may remember Cathriona O'Connell and Michael Coen as they both performed in our "Stars In Their Eyes" fundraiser last March as Tina Turner and Frank Sinatra respectively.
