There was great excitement for the society on Saturday last, 28th May, with the news that the society's production of "Hot Mikado" has been nominated for the Best Choreography award in the AIMS Award Scheme. The nominations were announced in Dublin by RTE personality Ronan Collins.
This is the first time that the society has been nominated for a choreography award and it is a reflection of the time and effort that was put into the show by all involved, particularly the choreographer, Mary McDonagh, and her assistant, Steffen Jorgensen.
Other nominations in the region were equally well received, in particular the news that society member Daniel Doherty has been nominated for a Best Comedian award for his performance as Bill Snibson in Boyle Musical Society's production of "Me And My Girl". This is Daniel's fourth AIMS nomination and Boyle's first, and our congratulations go to all involved.
Another nomination of note is that of Michael Coen as Best Supporting Male for the part of Major General Stanley in The Pirates Of Penzance with Galway Musical Society. Michael recently participated in, and won, our Stars In Their Eyes fundraiser as Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones.
Also, "Come The Dawn" by Encore Theatre Company, Galway has received an amazing five nominations, namely Best Choreography, Best Chorus, Best Supporting Female, Adjudicator's Special Award and Best Overall Show. This premiere production included current society members Gerry Miley, Daniel Doherty and Niall Heaney, and past members Natasha McGarry and Judith Campbell.
There were also nominations for the societies in Ballinrobe, Tuam, Athenry, Loughrea and Sligo in what has been a fantastic year for the western region.
The award winners will be announced at the Awards Banquet on Saturday 16th June in the INEC in Killarney. The society would like to congratulate all the nominees and wishes everyone the best of luck for what will be a great weekend.
